Mini Biography
Freida Pinto traversed the modeling circuit in Mumbai [represented by Elite Model Management India] for two years before gaining her big break when director Danny Boyle picked her out in the audition process to play the female lead, Latika, for his project Slumdog Millionaire (2008). In a promo interview, Boyle likened spotting her to his discovery of Kelly Macdonald for Trainspotting.
Surprisingly, Freida, who studied at Mumbai's St. Xaviers College, only began taking acting classes [she has done amateur theatre before] after completing her debut film - when she attended a three-month workshop by Barry John, the veteran theatre guru.
Between 2006-07, she anchored 'Full Circle', a travel show which was telecast on Zee International Asia Pacific. She went on assignments to Afghanistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Fiji among other countries.
Freida Pinto was born in Mumbai, India, on October 18, 1984. Her father is a banker, while her mother is the principal of a High School. Her sister, Sharon, is a producer at the Indian news channel, NDTV. Freida earned a bachelor’s degree in English at the St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, and got recruited by the Elite model agency in India at age 20. She has then done campaigns for such companies as Chanel, Visa and eBay.
In 2006-2007, she anchored the TV travel show Full Circle, and visited several Asian countries such as Afghanistan, Fiji, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
Freida always knew she wanted to be an actress, professional or not. Though with the high standards of India’s response to Hollywood – Bollywood – it’s very difficult to get ahead. As Freida put it: “You have to be a child of an actor or actress, or have a godfather.
As a current actress, former model and seasoned TV host, it's obvious that the camera agrees with Freida Pinto. Her past assignments have featured magazine covers and advertisements, which show that she has the right look to be the center of attention and not a background doormat. If Freida Pinto didn't have solid sex appeal, the high-profile Elite agency never would've given her modeling aspirations the time of day.
Her career-boosting role as the slightly submissive and altogether supportive Latika in Slumdog Millionaire made men worldwide fall for her and aspire to use her if they ever needed to "phone a friend," Millionaire-style.

She has appeared on several TV shows including Wendell Rodricks for Lakme Fashion Week 2006. She went on to anchor Full Circle on Zee International Asia Pacific, successfully completing 52 episodes where she presented a unique report on Afghanistan and explored the vibrant cultures and traditions of Fiji, Malaysia and Singapore among others.
She was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for her feature film debut as Latika in Slumdog Millionaire (2009) and shared a Screen Actors Guild award with the rest of the cast. Since then, she has had starring roles in Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010) and Julian Schnabel's Miral
Freida’s also starring in the movie Trishna, based on Thomas Hardy’s classic novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Trishna was shot on location in Rajasthan and Mumbai, India, and tells the story of one woman whose life is destroyed by a combination of love and circumstances. Set in contemporary Rajasthan, Trishna (Freida Pinto) meets a wealthy young British businessman Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed) who has come to India to work in his father’s hotel business. After an accident destroys her father’s Jeep, Trishna goes to work for Jay, and they fall in love. But despite their feelings for each other, they cannot escape the conflicting pressures of a rural society which is changing rapidly through industrialisation, urbanisation and, above all, education. Trishna’s tragedy is that she is torn between the traditions of her family life and the dreams and ambitions that her education has given her.
Trishna debuted at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival to good to mixed reviews (the movie was critiqued for not having a full script but instead let the actors improvise the dialogue), however most of them praised Freida’s portrayal of the titular character. She was called “superb”, “luminous” and with a “vulnerability that is raw, rare, and very moving”. The movie continued to play various film festivals all around the world. Sundance Selects bought the distribution rights, but no US release date has been given. The president of Sundance Selects, Jonathan Sehring, said “Trishna is Michael Winterbottom’s most beautiful and sensual film and features a truly sublime performance by Freida Pinto”.
lthough she's technically a one-hit wonder at the moment, Freida Pinto has all the makings of a future international star. After growing up with visions of Bollywood in her eyes, Freida Pinto found Hollywood instead thanks to director Danny Boyle and a resulting role in the critical darling Slumdog Millionaire -- not bad for a gal with nothing in the way of genuine acting experience. She currently has three films set for release in 2010: You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, opposite Anthony Hopkins and Josh Brolin; Miral, opposite Willem Defoe; and American Empire, opposite Jeremy Piven.
While acting in films may be new to her, Freida Pinto has been in front of the cameras for a few years. She previously hosted a travel-based TV show called Full Circle, and also served as a model through Elite, which had her chewing Wrigley's on TV and promoting VISA in print. Now a star-in-the-making, we expect big things from Freida Pinto -- and so does she.
Recounting how easily he had selected Freida Pinto for the role of Trishna, director Michael Winterbottom said he met her in London for the role and that “I would have begged her to do the part, but luckily she agreed to do it”. Freida has also stated that the role was a dream for her, as she had to “flex every actor muscle” to play the part.
Freida’s blossoming movie career isn’t all she’s got going for her; during the ’09 award season Miss Pinto emerged as a style-icon, having the most raved and talked-about outfits of the season. In March 2009 she was invited to sit front row at the Fashion Week in Paris and Milan. But her fashion-related career didn’t stop there, as she was announced as a new spokesmodel for L’Oreal Paris later in 2009. “I am very moved to be joining the great L’Oreal Paris family and all these personalities: a family I am now proud to be a part of”, Freida said of joining the worldwide beauty brand. Since then she’s appeared in several different campaigns worldwide for L’Oreal, including the ‘Renewal Lash Serum’ mascara, ‘Go 360˚ Clean’ face-wash, ‘Elvive Nutri-Gloss’ shampoo and more. In 2011 Freida co-hosted the brand’s annual Cinema Against AIDS Gala during the Cannes Film Festival.
“After this success, I still consider myself to be a regular Mumbai girl. I’m just one that has been extremely blessed.” Not knowing what the future holds for her, Freida is signed with one of the leading talent agencies in the world – CAA – and has the possibility (and luxury) to chose the parts she wants to play. She dreams of working with seasoned actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp. “I think they are simply fantastic and so versatile. I would love to do a dark romantic film with Johnny Depp.” I think it’s safe to say that this star isn’t done rising yet.
